The History of IMC’s Flagship Can Washer – Model #DL20-1

NOTE: As we are doing some Spring cleaning, we’ve uncovered many relics of the past that we think would be interesting to share with the IMC community. Over the next few weeks, we will go back in time & look at some retro products manufactured by IMC & see what changes (if any) have taken place over the years. Hope you will be following along on this trip down nostalgia lane.
Since IMC’s inception in 1955, we’ve brought innovative products to the market that are still in rotation today. One of those items is IMC’s flagship can washer – Model #DL20-1. How did this product come to life & how has it evolved to what it is now?
In this article, we will review the interesting history of Model #DL20-1 & compare/contrast it with the modern day model. Let’s begin.
The Beginning
Model #DL20-1 started as a solution for schools to quickly clean pots, cans & pans. Back then, schools were looking for more efficient ways to cleaning utensils while managing the nonstop meal service throughout the school day. Thus, Model #DL20-1 was born to act as a reliable time saver.
The high intensity spray nozzle is designed to blast away all dirt & debris while the utility sink holds & dries pot/cans/pans & washed utensils. Two important actions all with one product.
It should also be noted the original design was patented in June 1972, so it really was an industry first! In fact, the original filing happened in July 1970, but took 2 years to become official. Here’s a look:

Fast Forward to Today
Believe it or not, Model #DL20-1 has remained largely unchanged throughout the year – in form & function. The product is still heavily specified in educational environments & any facility where meal service hours are constant throughout the day or large volume is expected.
As far as physical appearance is concerned, the model has remained relatively the same as well. The dimensions are the same, the scrap tray is untouched, the same bullet feet are used as well. The real difference comes in the materials of the spray head & faucet, which are now updated with a modern appearance. Another difference is the foot pedal valves which have also been updated with better materials.
Aside from these minor differences, Model #DL20-1’s design remains iconic. The dual sink design with high backsplash has given it a unique identity in the foodservice industry.
It’s All About the Specs

As mentioned, the form & factory of the DL20-1 has remained the same throughout the years – a testament to its originality & impact.
IMC/Teddy has been developing products for almost 70 years, so we are in tune with the foodservice industry’s trends & demands. Many products developed years ago are still an important part of our catalog & still used in facilities today. For more IMC history, click here.
