How to Maintain Silverware Dispensers (The Right Way)

Knives, forks, spoons & even straws are just some of the most essential tabletop fixtures in today’s dining world. These utensils can take on any dining situation, but they need to be placed into a proper dispenser – especially if you are running a buffet or meal service operation. This is where silverware dispensers come into play. However, what are some maintenance tips to be aware of to avoid downtime?

In this article, we’ll give you 4 ways to properly maintain your silverware dispenser, so it is ready to go during the busiest hours of your meal service. Let’s begin.

1. Clean! (is it really a surprise?)

Whenever utensils are involved, cleanliness should be priority #1. No one wants to think about using a dirty utensil during meal service, so let’s eliminate any risk by properly cleansing your dispenser before & after service. It won’t be just a simple wipe down though.

Standard stainless steel silverware dispensers have several parts involved – cylinders, cylinder holders, casters, legs, handles & so on. Each one of these facets must be addressed in the cleaning process.

Remember to use a non-abrasive cleaner (containing no chloride) & the right cleaning pad such as a microfiber cleaning towel or soft sponge. Go over the product multiple times until it is sparkling clean & ready for patrons to use.

2. Caster Check

All silverware dispensers are mobile so they can be moved in & out of service areas with ease. With that said, the casters need to be checked periodically for any hiccups.

Inspect the casters for any hitches & strange travel. Test out the brakes also for any suspicious activity. If you are noticing the casters not gliding smoothly, you can use a lubricant such as a silicone spray or penetrating oil to get the casters up to snuff again.

3. Cylinder Wellness

The cylinders themselves need to be inspected for any damage such as dents or cracks before they are put back into rotation. Check for any visible signs of wear that could raise a few concerns. Using damaged cylinders can lead to a bad impression of your business & a potential loss of silverware.

Make sure the cylinders fit properly inside of the cylinder holders of the dispenser as well.

Most cylinders are made of either nylon or stainless steel so let’s review both types:

To clean the nylon cylinder, use a mild soap & warm water for spot cleaning – avoid using high heat or stiff brushes as this can warp the nylon.

For stainless steel cylinders, the same rules apply for standard stainless steel maintenance – use a gentle cleaner & rag. No wire brushes or harsh chemicals!

4. Body Inspection

Silverware dispensers are in constant use, so they are prone to scuffs, scratches, stains & in extreme cases, dents. Thoroughly inspect your silverware dispenser for any signs of major damage. Address the damage as quickly as possible before it becomes worse.

For light scuffs & scratches, use a mild abrasive such as baking soda and wipe with the grain. Use a stainless steel polish to top things off.
