Pot Racks: Your Questions Answered

Pot racks are valuable in any commercial kitchen. Their main job is to keep your pots, pans & other small wares organized during off service hours. They can be useful as a space saving solution as well depending on your layout. However, not all pot racks are the same & that is where some confusion has arisen. Do you know everything about pot racks?

In this article, we will go over the top 5 questions about pot racks. Along with this, we will give some installation/maintenance tips to be mindful of. Let’s jump right into it.

1. Does Location Matter? Which Pot Rack Do You Recommend?

Before answering this, you must address a few concerns:

  1. What is your current layout? If space is tight, a wall or table mounted pot rack is out of the question. Consider a ceiling mounted pot rack to get the most out of your wall & floor space. Plan your equipment around the space you are given for most effectiveness.
  2. How much clearance do you have? You will need ample space for traffic so pot racks should not obstruct any wares, doors, drawers, etc.

Based on the above, you can choose between a ceiling, wall, or table mounted pot rack to get the job done. Whichever you choose, they all have the same function.

2. Okay, I’m Installing a Ceiling Mounted Pot Rack – What is the Ideal Height?

We highly recommend the height from the top of the pot rack to the floor to be 7 feet, 6 inches. Again, test to see if this is sufficient for your application & no wares are being blocked. For example, if you are installing a ceiling mounted pot rack above a countertop, check to see if the height is suitable.

3. What IMC Products can be Optioned with a Table Mounted Pot Rack?

IMC table mounted pot racks (Models #PRT & #PRF) are available as standalone products, but can be built into a number of other IMC manufactured items. Here is a brief list:

IMC Worktables

Model #WT

Model #WTB

Model #WT1

Model #WTBC

IMC Scullery Sinks

Model #SCS

The actual length of your pot rack will of course depend on the length of the base product you are pairing it up with.

4. What is the Right Way of Maintaining Them?

We’ve written a guide previously here. To sum up, watch out for 3 vital points:

  1. Clean. Clean Clean. Pot racks fall into the unfortunate category of being installed & never being touched again. This can be a crucial mistake as pot racks slowly collect grease & dust from the environment. Keep your pot rack looking fresh by sanitizing it regularly.
  2. Stability should be checked often. The constant removal & hanging of wares can cause the pot rack to loosen up, especially if it is ceiling mounted. Make sure the pot rack is firm in place with no wiggling. Keep it balanced as well.
  3. Pot hooks are another forgotten item when it comes to maintenance. Pot hooks can become bent or damaged after prolonged use. Check the condition of your pot hooks & replace as needed.

5. Are There any Specific Weight Limits? How Many Items Can I Hang?

There is no definite number, but we recommend keeping the weight limit under 200 pounds. As far as an item limit, obviously make sure there is enough space between items to access them. Other than that, watch out for the weight limit & you should be fine.

Pot racks might seem like a simple product, but they can be complicated when put into action. With the above answers, you’ll be ready to tackle any pot rack dilemma put in your way. For a closer look at IMC’s pot racks, click here.
