How to Choose a Pot Rack That’s Right for You

Pots, pans, spatulas, tongs, whisks & the list goes on. These items are an essential part of any commercial kitchen. However, the sheer number of these utensils can lead to storage problems. After all, organization is one of the most important habits to practice in a commercial environment. For small-medium sized tools, pot racks are a useful piece of equipment to bring into your lineup. But, pot racks come in all shapes & sizes. Which one is the best for you?

In this article, we’ll supply a guide to help you pick the right pot rack. We’ll then detail out IMC’s pot rack offerings to aid you in your search. Let’s begin.

Consider The Three Types of Pot Racks

Three types of pot racks exist: ceiling mounted, wall mounted & table mounted. Each have their own pros & cons as per below:

Ceiling Mounted

Pros

  • The most common type – easy to use
  • Independent of other equipment in your lineup
  • Allows for a large variety of tools thanks to the elliptical shape

Cons

  • Installation entirely depends on ceiling height – may not be compatible with some layouts. The suggested height from the top of the pot rack to floor is 7′-6″.

Wall Mounted

Pros

  • Relatively compact – most are 12″ wide
  • Simple design – the majority are single bar, but double bar designs exist.
  • Easy installation – secure to the wall using brackets

Cons

  • Of the three types, it holds the least amount of tools
  • Uses up precious wall space – especially if your pot rack is completely full

Table Mounted

Pros

  • Holds a large variety of tools
  • Easier organization thanks to the elliptical shape (certain models)
  • Pair with your prep table to provide a complete work station

Cons

  • Height constrained – pot rack must be below the ceiling for optimal use.

Assess Your Items & Your Location

If you are going to be hanging a lot of items, consider a ceiling or table mounted pot rack. If you have only a few items, a wall mounted pot rack should suffice.

For location, if you are planning to install a pot rack on top of a kitchen island, you should opt for a ceiling mounted pot rack. If you are planning to install the pot rack against the wall, then a wall mounted pot rack will be a more attractive option.

Once again, clearance & space will be a major factor in pot rack selection. Make sure that the rack you choose is sized to provide enough clearance around your wares & no doors or drawers will obstruct it. Stacking damage is a real problem & pot racks are designed to eliminate this issue altogether.
