Looking Back at IMC Hand Sinks

We conclude our nostalgic trip this month with a classic favorite – hand sinks. Mandatory handwashing in medical facilities began in 1847 & there’s been no stopping it since. The required hand washing concept spread to other industries like food & pharmaceuticals. With the advent of hand hygiene, there needed to be an influx of hand sinks to accommodate the demand. Thus, many were built & the rest is history. IMC/Teddy jumped on the craze from the get-go with wall hand sinks & even the freestanding hand sink. Are these products any different today?
In this article, we will give you a look at IMC hand sinks of the past & compare them to what we offer today. Let’s begin the journey.
The Past is Actually the Present
Throughout the decades, Model #WS has largely remained the same. The body is still constructed from 16-gauge type 304 stainless steel with an integrated backsplash & marine edge. The front apron is still intact & the classic “Z” strip for wall mounting still in play. The faucet & liquid soap dispenser have always been available with the hand sink as well.
Not much has changed with Model #HS Freestanding Hand Sink over the years. With the 16-gauge construction, 163⁄4” high backsplash, removable front panel & integrated towel dispenser, Model #HS is still a force today.
To sum up, these designs are timeless & have seen little, if any, changes throughout the years. IMC engineering has really stood up to the test of time.
Spec Sheets
We’ve dug out the original spec sheets for both WS & HS, and you’ll be surprised how little each product has changed. Dimensions of each product have been slightly adjusted, but overall, the form factor has stood in place. Take a quick peek here:

Hands Free Options Existed!
Yes, even back in the early days, hands-free options were a thing. Although the recent pandemic has brought on a strong increase of hands free options, the original hand sinks designed by IMC had this already in place. Operations remained the same too, either by foot or knee valves.
IMC/Teddy has been developing products for almost 70 years, so we are in tune with the foodservice industry’s trends & demands. Many products developed years ago are still an important part of our catalog & still used in facilities today. For more IMC history, click here.
