What is Banded Grating?

No floor trough would be complete without grating. But as we all know, each project is different based on the specific environment. Ultimately, the benefit of having customizable options is crucial for meeting application requirements. One common option for grating is called “banded,” but what is it exactly & what are the benefits?

In this article, we’ll break down what banded grating is & give you some examples of what the grating looks like inside of a floor trough. Let’s start.

Quick Definition of Banded Grating

To put it simply, banding is an option to protect the open ends of the grating panel. During the banding process, a stainless steel flat bar is welded to the open ends of the grating panel. This provides a uniform appearance around all sides of the grating panel, closing off any gaps along the edges. Here’s a picture & a close-up of a typical IMC grating with banding:

So, Why Choose Banded Grating?

There are three main reasons why you would want to pick banded grating:

1. Enhanced Durability – Banded grating really shines if it is placed in an area where vehicular traffic is prominent. This is because banded grating provides an extra stiffness. Banding can reduce impact stresses by transferring loads to adjacent bars. Furthermore, banding should be used when the ends of the bearing bars are unsupported.

2. Promote Safety  If you will be removing or relocating the grating often, it would be wise to consider banded grating. This is because banding keeps the panels flat & can prevent injury during installation & removal. The flat sides of the grating make it much simpler to pick up from the edges than standard grating.

3. Improve Appearance - Banded grating simply gives that “complete feel” to a floor trough. The closed off edges of the grating give a superior architectural appearance over the standard open sided grating. For that upscale & fresh look, consider banded grating for your floor trough.
