How to Maintain a Worktable the Right Way
Worktables are the most common piece of equipment in a commercial environment. With the obvious advantages of additional prep & storage space, it’s not hard to see why. As you add more options, the value of a worktable goes up dramatically. However, just like with any item, worktables must be maintained properly in order to be of any use. What are some things to look out for?
In this article, we will go over 4 ways to properly maintain your IMC worktable. We’ll also suggest some handy cleaning tools that should be used on stainless steel items in general. Let’s jump in.
1. Clean Thoroughly!
Worktables are used constantly, maybe more so than any other item in your lineup. Completing your prep tasks such as plating & slicing up ingredients requires a flat stable surface. After some time, worktables will inevitably become filthy with scraps & debris. This is your cue to wash & sanitize your top surface to keep everything hygienically sound.
This means using a mild solution like rubbing alcohol or baking soda (do not use anything that contains chlorine or bleach) and no abrasive tools (no wool or wire pads). Be sure to get all the edges of the worktable & scrub down any accessories such as drawers or pot racks completely.
2. Check for Any Structural Damage
Worktables are held up by legs. Without the legs, worktables would not be worktables. Over time, the sheer weight of items & constant use may spark some maintenance of the legs. Check all areas of your worktable for any signs or bends, kinks or dents. Here are some more specific guidelines:
A. Legs – Inspect the bullet feet or flanged feet, whichever your worktable is equipped with. Ensure that the feet are straight & not crooked to one side.
B. Crossbracing – Every angle of your crossbracing must be straight for the maximum stability. Look for any dips.
B. Casters – If your worktable is equipped with casters, see if your worktable is gliding smoothly without any hitches. Remove any obstructions that may hinder movement. Test the brakes for operation.
3. Optional Accessory Maintenance
No two worktables are alike, thanks to the multiple options & accessories that can be outfitted to them. Some of the most common options are drawers, sink bowls, casters, overshelves & so on. Periodically check these accessories for any constant wear. In particular, here are some tips:
A. Drawers – Make sure they are opening & closing smoothly. Test the lock & key for function.
B. Sink Bowls – They are a haven for germs & bacteria if you do not sanitize them regularly. Special attention should be brought to your sink bowl(s) during cleaning.
C. Overshelves – See if the shelf is straight & not leaning. Also, make sure to clean it periodically to avoid any dirt & grime buildup.
4. Check Underneath the Worktable (Yes, Really)
You might think only the top of the worktable matters, but it is wise to check the entire product for any problems. Underneath the worktable houses the channels, sound deadening material & the gussets for the legs. Here’s what to look out for:
A. Channels – Are they secure? Any excess movements?
B. Sound Deadening – Generally, it’s a white material spread across the whole bottom of the worktable. Is it etching or coming off?
C. Gussets – Check for any signs of wear. Most of all, see if the legs are solidly placed within the gusset.
